Lady spikers slammed by Notre Dame
GILROY – In a tough game last Thursday against the heavil favored Notre Dame Spirits, the Lady Mustang volleyball team added another loss to its struggling league season. Gilroy lost in three games 15-2,15-5, and 15-4.
The Lady Mustangs seemed flustered the whole night – always on their heals playing defense.
“The plan was to get everyone involved,” Head coach Sam Navarez said. “We did a couple of adjustments and played as hard as we could. This loss was my fault.”
The adjustments did not work as planned with the Mustangs dropping the first game, 15-2. When that last point hit, Gilroy seem a bit shocked, as was the crowd. The Notre Dame Spirits took a lot out of the Garlic spikers in the first game – which carried over into the next two games.
The highlight of the Mustangs’ match was a play that woke up the crowd and was able to get the the team going. It all started by an outstanding diving dig from Raquel Lucente. A perfect pass to teammate Shayna Kiefer then set up Lourella Palao for the kill. After that play, the Lady Mustangs were ready to go, but soon after Notre Dame put a stop to that with some punishing kills.
There was no mercy from the Spirits, who kept pushing and pushing until the match was over.
Coach Navarez said after the game, “They have nothing to be ashamed of I asked them to do different things and try out new things. The outcome is my fault.”
The Lady Mustangs will have their last home game Tuesday night against North Salinas at 6 p.m.
