Luis Magana clears 13-feet, 9-inches on Thursday.

Luis Magana cleared a personal-best 13-feet, 9-inches in the pole vault during Gilroy High’s Tri-County Athletic League dual meet at Salinas High on Thursday.

Magana’s previous best this season was 13-6 and head coach Cathy Silva said that Magana has his sights set on 14 feet. He could hit that this weekend at either the Top 8 Invitational at San Jose City College today or the Bill Kearney Invite in Salinas on Saturday.

The clearance is the fourth-best in the Central Coast Section this season.

Despite Magana’s victory in the pole vault and other first-place finishes from Jourdan Soares (100-meter dash, high jump), Alfredo Mireles (shot put), Austin Boyd (discus), the Mustangs dropped the dual.

On the girls’ side, Chelsey Kalata (200), Samantha Una Dia (100, 300 hurdles) and Sarina Sandoval (shot put), completed top finishes in a loss to the Cowboys.

BASEBALL

The Gilroy High baseball team collected 16 hits against Alvarez on Thursday. Perhaps the more important factor in the Mustangs 9-0 victory in Salinas: “No errors, thank god,” GHS manager Jared Gamble said.

Also, Josh Boykin had two RBIs and Bubu Garcia delivered an RBI double.

On the bump, Brenden Holler all owed four hits and struck out four in five innings to get the win. Matt Kinoshita and Dexter each pitched one inning and both struck out a pair of hitters.

The Mustangs (5-10 overall, 4-8 TCAL), who have won two straight, are at San Benito at 4 p.m. today.
