Saint Joseph’s Family Center Needs: Traditional

In that same tradition that prompts us to be thankful at the dinner table, let us publicly acknowledge this Thanksgiving season some of the many graces we find in Gilroy.

Let us be thankful for newcomers to our community like David Cox, the director of St. Joseph’s Family Center, who, with quiet grace, goes about helping those people who need a meal or help paying a utility bill.

Let us be thankful for the abundant natural beauty in our community – the surrounding hills, the trees searing the gray sky with autumn color, the grass-filled parks that dot our city, the Uvas Levee path that winds through the center of town.

Let us be thankful for a community of volunteers like Jodi Heinzen, recently named Woman of the Year by the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce. Many enrich Gilroy with their time and talent.

Let us be thankful for teachers like Joey Fortino and Phil Robb, who have poured their souls into building the marvelous band and choral programs at Gilroy High School.

Let us be thankful for our jobs. Most of us are fortunate to have employment that allows us to live in a place of beauty with an unsurpassed climate.

Let us be thankful for organizations like the Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center which aids injured animals and educates children about the beasts in our midst.

Let us be thankful for good-humored people in everyday jobs like Karen Fortino at the downtown coffee shop who greets customers each morning with a smile, a bit of conversation and a hot cup of java.

Let us be thankful for our lives here. Gilroy is filled with special people. Thanksgiving is the holiday to pause and ponder just that.
