Disney on Ice does it again, bringing a cacophony of color, imagination and creativity that children and adults have come to expect from this ice skating extravaganza. Heroines and heroes from the “Toy Story” movies are bundled into one evening without going into overdrive, and are presented with spectacular special effects and the usual Disney sparkle.
The toys go on an adventure when they are dispatched to a toybox because their beloved Andy has grown up and gone off to college. It begins when they are donated to a children’s daycare center. With special effects and lighting we are taken on a journey that involves memories of the good old days and a plot with many humorous and suspenseful moments.
Director Patty Vincent and creative director and writer Jerry Bilik are sensitive enough to see these productions through the eyes of imaginative minds – no matter how old – and keep the production moving at a mind-boggling pace.
Choreographer Cindy Stuart returns from creating the shimmering numbers of many past Disney on Ice productions. Stuart, who has worked with silver medalist Rosalyn Sumners, Nancy Kerrigan, Katarina Witt, two-time National Pairs Champions Jenni Meno and Todd Sand, and World Champion Chen Lu, is a true artist who paints smooth, beautiful routines that are more than the usual ice show shtick.
Her imaginative presentations keep the attention of 3-year-olds as well as adults that come to enjoy a unique evening. “The Green Army Drill Number” and “Woody’s Roundup” are a delight in movement and an artistic tribute to her talent.
Costume designer Scott Lane brings stunning and imaginative creativity to the eye. The costumes that appear are true to the character in design and detail. Lighting designer Alex Reardon and scenic designer Joe Stewart push the envelope.
Having to cover such a vast area is no easy task and if not done well, the whole production could be lost in blank spaces. Never fear: these two are a credit to their craft and bring enough beauty and vitality to fill the huge arena.
Aided by a cast of excellent skaters and charming music, the whole show does exactly what it’s supposed to do: it gives off a glow of happiness and well being.
A fun evening is guaranteed with the Disney On Ice’s production of “Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 3.” The kids will be excited seeing their animated friends come to life and the adults will enjoy the sounds and beautiful presentation.
