Hollister – A routine traffic stop on Highway 25 Tuesday night led to the arrest of a suspected San Jose drug dealer and yielded nearly $4,000 worth of methamphetamine and cocaine, police said.
Ruben Perez, 33, was pulled over by California Highway Patrol officers on Highway 25 south of Shore Road for driving 90mph in a 55 mph zone, said Unified Narcotics Enforcement Team Cmdr. Mark Colla. While Perez was searching for insurance documents in the trunk of his 2005 Mercedes-Benz sedan, a bag of suspected methamphetamine fell out of his pants, Colla said.
A search of the car turned up 60 grams of the drug valued at $1,600, Colla said. After finding the drugs, CHP officers contacted UNET for a follow-up. UNET agents served a search warrant on Perez’s San Jose area home uncovering an additional 52 grams of methamphetamine and seven grams of cocaine. The drugs were found in a safe in Perez’s bedroom, Colla said. All together, UNET agents seized $3,700 worth of illegal drugs.
Colla said Perez had two outstanding criminal cases for drug sales, one in San Benito County and another in Santa Clara County.
Perez was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance for sale, transportation of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance. He is being held at the San Benito County Jail in lieu of $45,000 bail.
