The future of transportation in Santa Clara Valley will be decided tonight as voters decide on county transportation Measures A and B – neither of which will increase or decrease any taxes.
Measure A is a required six-year advisory vote on the Valley Transportation Authority’s 20-year transit plan adopted in Dec. 2000. If passed, the Measure is will act as a citizen’s stamp of approval for the VTA’s Valley Transportation Plan 2020 – which provides for improving highways; roads; buses and light rail cars; completing the Tasman East, Capitol and Vasona light rail lines; developing BART connection for the South Bay; planning for rapid transit; and supporting the operation of Caltrain and commuter rail services.
Measure B allows county voters to commit approximately $2.1 billion in state and federal transportation funds to improved roadway, pedestrian and bicycle projects through the year 2036. If passed this measure would bind the VTA to allocate discretionary government transportation funds to roadway, bicycle and pedestrian improvements through 2036 – ensuring the money goes to roadways instead of public transit.
