Red Phone: Noise cannons are a part of life
"I am replying to Red Phone about the noise cannons on Sept 27. I also live in the area near Roop Road and New Avenue. I have helped farmers in that area mainly with their cherry orchards. The noise cannons are a necessity if you ever have a cherry crop. I don't know if you aware of the cost to put up nets over 2,000 cherry trees.

Getting out: Purisima Creek offers slice of spring during summer
The chamber of commerce brochure says our summer California hills are golden. I don’t buy it. Except for a few moments after sunrise and before sunset, the hills look brown to me. Each year, the warming weather dries the seasonal streams and bakes the life force out winter’s lush grasses. When it does, I feel a bit of my life force ebb as well.

Gilroy coyote and the pack that’s after your wallet
Started my day Wednesday with a lone coyote, which I've seen before but never so close. On a chilly walk with the dogs backside of Christmas Hill Park, the coyote, like the one in the old roadrunner cartoons, sped by going a million miles an hour 25 yards ahead across our path. Dogs take chase. Coyote chasing rabbit. After a half mile, the coyote stopped, the dogs pulled up and headed back my way and the coyote forlornly bayed into the frosty dawn. He seemed to have lost his pack. Then, I cartoon kaboomed on the iced-over walkway next to the amphitheater and headed next for a meeting with MayorAl. Ah, never a dull Gilroy moment.

“Mary Poppins” was written by P.L.Travers, a native Australian who spent most of her life in England. Disney made an entrancing movie, with Julian Fellowes adapting the story for the stage with the award-winning Sherman Brothers supplying the music and lyrics. Their delightful music and words fascinated and gave the world a charming gift.
