The flu season is fast approaching—the other day while at a stoplight I was sandwiched in between two people who were coughing incessantly—but fortunately science has given us ways to get through the winter months with fewer sick days. In terms of preventing the flu, getting a flu shot—surprise—is a must-do.

As Father’s Day approaches, I am hit with the realization that Don Quixote is the perfect image for my dad. I hadn't thought of it before, but it is so true. He was so imaginative, so creative, and so full of stories and ideas all the time. He was like a walking encyclopedia. He wanted to do things he couldn't possibly do, and he had a very thin grasp on reality sometimes – he was off tilting at windmills.

Q: My best friend and I each have a puppy from the same litter. They are 9 months old and very healthy. Randolph (my dog) has a small, smooth lump on the side of his shoulder. It’s been there for about two weeks and seems to be staying the same size. His brother, Willie, doesn’t seem to have any lumps or bumps. I’m worried about skin cancer. Do young puppies get cancer?
SMS Fourth Grader wins grand prize in city’s poster contest
GILROY - St. Mary School Fourth Grader Alexis Kong was a grand prize winner in the city of Gilroy's Young Artists Poster Contest. Alexis' poster was one of 5 that judges selected to be professionally printed and distributed at local schools and city facilities. The posters are currently on display at the Gilroy Center for the Arts at Monterey and Seventh Streets through February 25. The theme of this year's contest is character counts, show respect to others.
