Red Phone: Making New Avenue new

"Hi, I'm wondering if the lines on the road on New Avenue past the outlets are going to get repainted this winter. I drive the roads every day, and they are really hard to see especially in the rain. I'm just wondering if something is going to be done about them to make them more visible."

Is something rotten about Gilroy’s street fruit vendors?

Yeah, it’s really amazing. I was reading the paper today about how a guy holding a white cross standing at a street corner is carded by a code enforcer for being unsafe and you get these street vendors on 6th and Church Street that are selling trays or racks of fruits, nuts, this and that, and nothing is ever done. Those people are all over the place and cars stop. These guys are illegally selling bags and cartons of fruit. Why isn’t code enforcement doing something about that? I think it’s wrong that people are selling fruit on street corners. It’s not right. Why isn’t code enforcement doing something about that?

Red Phone: See Grins set to open

"I am calling to see what business is opening at the old Wal-Mart building near Hometown Buffet."

Choirs aren’t skipping a beat and two musical suggestions for G-Fest

Seriously, no time like the present for a rousing rendition of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” Nights and nights in the 20s. The garden is a mess and when I left the cut Christmas tree outside for one night and filled the red bucket with water, it froze solid as a hockey rink. Good thing we didn’t shell out for any front-porch poinsettias. Always hiccup on the poinsettia pronunciation ... poins easy, it’s the setia or setta part that’s the stumble.

City summer rec guide reveals an underlying issue

Beautiful cover on the city of Gilroy’s parks and recreation Summer 2012 Activity Guide shot at the Christopher High School swimming pool with three of Gilroy’s finest young lifeguards. The guide went to the printer weeks and weeks ago no doubt, and, lo and behold, there’s not a word mentioned about activities available at the South Valley Middle School swimming pool. Yep, not going to get many participants when the activity isn’t even listed in the city summer guide. The city staff, clearly, decided to close the pool long before our City Council decided to keep it open. And therein lies a systemic cultural problem that has to be dealt with and eradicated before our city moves forward. As one of our astute Community Pulse Board members commented upon answering the question about whether the city should spend the money to keep the South Valley pool open: “The culture of NO has got to GO.” Not good for a brochure …
