NHL: Dallas rallies to defeat Sharks 5-4 in shootout
SAN JOSE – Dallas overcame two-goal deficits twice Sunday afternoon on the way to a 5-4 shootout victory over the San Jose Sharks at sold-out HP Pavilion.
Technology and tradition co-exist in Gilroy’s classrooms
My greatest accomplishments in third grade were winning the spelling championship and retaining my position as a steady-ender for jump rope during lunch recess. Nowadays, some third graders are focusing on explaining character development in Peter Pan, symbolism in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and being able to name more than ten different shapes. In the spirit of full disclosure, I am a weekly classroom volunteer at Navigator's Gilroy Preparatory School (GPS) and the obnoxiously proud mother of a third grade teacher at GPS. My daughter thinks I work in the classroom to help her with her two classes of thirty children. The real truth is that I go for the hugs the kids give me!

Online surveys empower public with a voice
A vital component of effective community leadership is getting feedback from the people who are most impacted by the quality of that leadership. Leaders need to know if what they are doing is working and taking the community in the right direction. If it isn’t working, they need to know the reasons for that failure. They also need to be open to hearing ideas from the public that can improve their organizations.
Joey, Buddy and LadyGirl: Angels sent from Heaven
My dog Joey, named after Joe Montana of course, is my constant companion and fellow 49er fan. He always listens to me if I have complaints about how the team is doing and celebrates with me when they are doing well. He has his very own 49er jersey and wears it proudly on game days. Joey was found wandering alone in rural Hollister about a year and a half ago. Even though we don’t know his true heritage, he is most likely a Maltese mix.
Red Phone: Chip seal street not sealed
“The city recently put a cheap chip seal coating on our street near Las Animas School. For those who don't know what this is, it's a low cost way of preserving pavement. It's a oil seal with small rocks that stick to it. Basically a mess. The problem is that it has now been a couple months and the small rocks are everywhere. And I mean everywhere, even in the garage and in our house. They have damaged some of our neighbors wood floors. We have called the city to come out and take a look at it and they say this is normal. I can't believe that after months have gone by that the rocks should still be coming up. Nobody in the neighborhood is happy about this and the part that still amazes me is that the streets are only nine years old and did not even need to be sealed. There are much worse streets in Gilroy.”
