A year for pine siskins, red crossbills and red-breasted nuthatches

A what year for what? Many of our feathered friends from Canada are enjoying the relative warmth, sunshine and especially the abundant food of South Valley this winter.

TERAJI: Students learn about possible future careers

This past month, Eliot Elementary School in Gilroy has been celebrating “Career Month.” I had a great time visiting as a guest speaker on the topic of writing to the entire fifth grade, in two waves of 97 students total.

Dear Red Phone,

Churches to partner in disaster preparedness

Morgan Hill is a wonderful place to live. The climate is pleasant; the small town ambiance is inviting, and access to beaches, mountains, and big city culture is easy. But, like all of California, it is a dangerous place to live. There is a constant threat looming of damage from earthquakes, floods, wildfires and man-made destruction such as train-derailments.

Cookie time: It’s the Girl Scout ‘gotcha!’

The powers that be at Girl Scout headquarters aren’t dumb. They know that, at about this time, New Year’s Resolutions we so devoutly made at the onset of January are becoming a bit threadbare. Observing Lent? Try this shrimp recipe

For those who observe it, we are now in the season of Lent, a time of reflection and sacrifice. One of the sacrifices I grew up with is abstaining from the consumption of meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays. Local photographer’s work on display

The current exhibit in the Gilroy City Hall Gallery is by photographer Rachelle Lee. An Idaho native who relocated to Gilroy with her husband in 2004, she was quick to tell me that she loves Gilroy for its small town feeling, the lovely views and most of all the friendly people. The exhibit featuring portraits of children will be on view through March and April.

Gopher problem eased without poison bait

Q: We have a terrible gopher problem in our yard. I’ve tried unsuccessfully to trap these varmints. So I talked to a garden expert who suggested poison. But I’m afraid our dogs will get some of the poison, and I know that could be very dangerous. Any suggestions?

IRA contribution limits rise in 2013

Time to boost your IRA balance. In 2013, you can contribute up to $5,500 to your Roth or traditional IRA. If you will be 50 or older by the end of 2013, your contribution limit is actually $6,500 this year, thanks to the IRS’s “catch-up” provision. The new limits represent a $500 increase from 2012 levels.
