Observing Lent? Try this shrimp recipe

For those who observe it, we are now in the season of Lent, a time of reflection and sacrifice. One of the sacrifices I grew up with is abstaining from the consumption of meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays. This meant, in most cases, my family had fish – and my favorite was always shrimp. One fantastic and simple recipe for shrimp is a method my mom learned from my aunt.

Local photographer’s work on display

The current exhibit in the Gilroy City Hall Gallery is by photographer Rachelle Lee. An Idaho native who relocated to Gilroy with her husband in 2004, she was quick to tell me that she loves Gilroy for its small town feeling, the lovely views and most of all the friendly people. The exhibit featuring portraits of children will be on view through March and April.

Gopher problem eased without poison bait

Q: We have a terrible gopher problem in our yard. I’ve tried unsuccessfully to trap these varmints. So I talked to a garden expert who suggested poison. But I’m afraid our dogs will get some of the poison, and I know that could be very dangerous. Any suggestions?

IRA contribution limits rise in 2013

Time to boost your IRA balance. In 2013, you can contribute up to $5,500 to your Roth or traditional IRA. If you will be 50 or older by the end of 2013, your contribution limit is actually $6,500 this year, thanks to the IRS’s “catch-up” provision. The new limits represent a $500 increase from 2012 levels.

School supplies event would be sweet music to many teacher’s ears

While watching the Grammy Awards on TV, the host made a big deal about nominating your favorite music teacher for the Music Educator of the Year Award and I thought about the retiring Gilroy Unified School District’s treasured teacher Phil Robb and how much beautiful music he has helped make through the years with all the choirs. The Grammy Music Educator Award is given “In recognition of the significant role of teachers in shaping their students’ musical experiences … and will be given out during Grammy Week 2014.”  The nomination process is open and detailed at www.grammymusicteacher.com. Deadline for submissions is April 15 and the winner receives a $10,000 honorarium. What would be especially cool is if the GHS/CHS choir could sing back-up on stage at the Grammy Awards for one of the bands. Now that would be some swan song for a great retiring teacher.

Using the convenient minor convention

Last time we talked about opening the bidding when partner does not have a five-card suit. The bridge gurus came up with an interesting convention to handle just this situation. Called the “convenient minor” convention, partner would open one club or diamond, bidding the longer and stronger suit. If partner is 4-4 in the minors, then partner opens one diamond - this allows partner to respond two clubs at the next opportunity. And, if partner is 3-3 in the minors, then partner opens one club. This allows YOU to bid one diamond if that is your best suit.

Drier-than-average rain season adds financial pressure for farmers

The start of 2013 has been dry one for South County, and the impact for farmers is difficult to predict.

‘The Flying Karamazov Brothers’: Serendipity unleashed

“The Flying Karamazov Brothers” present an outrageous, hilarious blend of music, comedy, dance, theatre and juggling. They do not fly, they are not brothers and they are not Russian, but they do invite the audience into their zany world. They took their name from Fyodor Dostoevsky's Russian tragedy “The Brothers Karamazov.” Why? Don't ask. It just goes along with their serendipitous antics.
