Report: Mayweather changes mind again, set to face Guerrero

The drawn-out saga of who Floyd Mayweather Jr. will fight next could be nearing a close, and all signs in the boxing world point to Gilroy native Robert Guerrero being his opponent.

Oh-So-Spicy Awards and let’s bring the chamber dinner back to Gilroy

Not that it really matters, but “Spry” Sig Sanchez’s honor at the Chamber’s annual Gilroy “Spice of Life” community awards dinner should have been the “Lifetime Achievement” award instead of “Man of the Year,” an honor which he probably should have received when he was in his 60s, instead of in his 90s. Sig did a grand job, as usual, with a classy and humorous acceptance speech. Besides that, I got to chat briefly with his two charming granddaughters, Nicole and Jaynie (hope I remember that spelling from filling out the Little League line-up card), who were friends with my daughters growing up. Love it when I talk to young people who I knew when they were “this high” who are blossoming as young adults.

Getting Out: Start toward goals with one step

Conventional wisdom says that we learn life’s lessons in the school of hard knocks, and I suppose that is true. But I have learned many of life’s most important lessons during my outdoor wanderings.

First aid for pets

When a friend or significant other gets hurt we generally have a good idea of how to take care of them, but what do you do when your pet is in an accident?  Unfortunately, most pet owners do not prepare themselves for these tragic incidents until it is too late.

Christians pray for unity

In the Gospel of John, Jesus told his followers: “A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I love you, so must you love one another.” A scholar has estimated that there are some 34,000 separate Christian denominations, and so this commandment seems to have been broken 34,000 times.

Herring gull rescued from blood-sucking leeches

The first person who called the Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center last month to report an injured juvenile herring gull in Gilroy thought the bird had been shot in the face with a pellet gun. A short while later, another call was received about the same gull from a person who believed it to have been hit head-first by a vehicle.

Disney On Ice presents ‘Dare To Dream’: A beautiful combination of sights and sounds

Disney on Ice does it again, bringing its usual cacophony of color, imagination and creatively that children and adults have come to expect from Disney’s ice skating extravaganzas. All the favorite Disney heroines and heroes are here with a mix of aerial and ice choreography.

It’s a great time for soup

Although spring is a month away, we have plenty of cold days ahead. Hot soup can be a good cure for those brisk evenings still ahead. I enjoy many varieties of soup, but one that will always hold a place in my heart is Italian Lentil Soup.

Quiet cockatiel should be checked by vet

Q: Our cockatiel, Megalo, has become quiet lately. His appetite is good and his droppings look normal. But he hasn't been singing much since we returned from a vacation trip. All he wants to do is sit on his perch and ruffle up his feathers. Our guy has always been a talkative bird, so I think he might be sick. Should we take him for a checkup?

It was a winning day for Cal’s first Super Bowl

With the 49ers on the road to the Super Bowl for the first time in over a decade, the Bay Area was on fire. Red and gold ruled while Super Bowl parties took on a fever not seen in years. At our house, the Super Bowl gathering comprised our family of 10, including baby Cal who, at 6 months old, was experiencing his first Big Game.
