Move beyond the familiar and try something new
At a recent high school commencement ceremony, Yale University President Richard C. Levin offered valuable advice to college-bound students on how to benefit the most from the experiences lying ahead. His message was not only directly relevant to the graduating seniors, but virtually for everyone else - even those who graduated from college decades ago.

Adopt Licorice
Licorice is a black beauty with faint tabby markings and a subtle orange/brown topcoat. She loves to play with everyone, and her favorite toys are little balls of fluff, dangly things, and toy mice. In her mind, a kitty can never have enough mice. She also like to cuddle, but only after play time.

These are the same holes – which are close to the bar – that Bing Crosby and his buddies would play and have fun between.
Super Bowl sick, garlic wreath for the queen and ICE for your phone
Super sick for the Super Bowl, so Miss Jenny and I missed the planned cioppino feast and plopped on the couch nursing the nasty bug with cranberry juice and seltzer water while the 49ers dove, then soared, then came up one – or perhaps two – play calls short. Disappointed? Sure. Dismayed? Hardly. It’s hard to get there, but all the pieces are in place for a few return trips. And next time I’m sure I’ll be exclaiming and exhorting once again … can’t remember having ever sat silent watching an entire 49ers game.
Bridge: No five-card suit? Here’s how to bid
When I first heard about bridge conventions, I immediately remembered that every time I attended a convention, they always had fun parties. And I was for all the parties I could get! Only later did I learn that a bridge convention is a bid that carries a special meaning with it - such as the five-card Major Convention - oh well ... I was already hooked!
Vines may be dormant, but wineries are bustling
In the cold, dark days of winter, our grapevines go dormant. The grape vine stops the uptake of water from its roots to keep moisture from freezing and bursting inside the plant cells. Any remaining water inside the vine is transferred to an inter-cellular area where it can safely freeze without causing any damage. All growth is put on hold to conserve energy for the next growing season.
