Teraji: An important message from a higher power

My friend Edith Edde makes the biggest pots of soup in Gilroy: two pots so giant that a buff athlete can barely lift them. How she moves them around her kitchen is a mystery to me. They are filled to the brim with beans she has soaked herself until they are tender, which are added to other nutritious ingredients and served in a warm and meaty broth fit to fill the soul on a cold winter’s night.

Legalize marijuana after what I’ve witnessed?

In a recent “Around The Water Cooler” panelists were asked “Given that Mexico is discussing legalizing marijuana, should California follow Colorado and Washington states and legalize the drug?”

Gentle reminders on managing volatility

As I look back on 2012, it was a fairly volatile year in the stock markets, with an especially frustrating last few weeks of December. That said, it turned out ok with the S&P returning 11.53% - not a bad year after all.

Hollister church celebrates 110 years

No doubt there have been Episcopalians living in San Benito County since its earliest farming days. In 1876, the first Book of Common Prayer service was celebrated for local residents by Bishop Kip, who traveled to Hollister from his cathedral in San Francisco, and Father Hammond, who came from St. Stephen's in Gilroy, for the special occasion.

All aboard for ‘Anything Goes’

All aboard for the dizziest, silliest, funniest cruise ever. This plot is a bit of fluff that is highly enhanced by Cole Porter's lyrics and music, and is amazingly spectacular to the eyes and ears.

The family that texts together …

Muffled voices coming from what sounds like the other room:

Keep pets away from those who have the flu

Q: This flu epidemic has all of us worried. Can our dog or cat catch the flu from one of us if we are sick?

Sharks prepare for Sunday’s season opener

A 48-game schedule for the San Jose Sharks begins Sunday with a visit to the Calgary Flames.

Reports: Mayweather plans to fight Guerrero, then Alvarez

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is expected to fight Gilroy native and interim WBC welterweight champion Robert Guerrero on May 4 in Las Vegas, ESPN UK reported Sunday.

‘Servin’ the public … and can you believe no breakfast for the troops?

Henry Servin is Gilroy’s new city transportation engineer, and he’s out there “Servin” the public already. I don’t know the gentleman yet, but intend to have a reporter give him a traffic buzz soon. Had to give a fist pump at my desk when I read that he said taking a look at syncing traffic lights at Sunrise Drive, West Day Road and East Day Road along Santa Teresa Boulevard might help with traffic flow around Christopher High at peak times. Hallelujah! Servin says it takes time to coordinate with the Valley Transportation Authority, but it’s clear that “Servin” the public is about listening, driving about town,  making keen observations and working through the process to a good end. Henry seems to get it.
