Monterey County: Wine country with a gentle attitude

When one thinks of Monterey – Cannery Row, The Monterey Bay Aquarium, Steinbeck, Big Sur and Pebble Beach are the mental pictures that flash in the mind, unless you are a wine lover. Surprise! Well, you don’t have to be a wine lover to enjoy the magnificent wineries that snuggle into the hills of stunning Monterey County.

Remember: Investing is a marathon – not a sprint

Investors sometimes may get frustrated with their investments because those investments don’t seem to produce quick results. Perhaps that’s understandable in our fast-paced society, in which we’ve grown accustomed to instant gratification. But investing is, by nature, a long-term activity. If you look at it in terms of an athletic event, it’s not a sprint, in which you must pull out all the stops to quickly get where you’re going. Instead, it’s more like the 26.2-mile race known as a marathon.

New Year’s resolutions and willpower

Every year about this time, I write a list of New Year’s resolutions. It’s the usual stuff: Work out three times a week, cut back on coffee and alcohol, floss daily, relearn Spanish, watch less television, etc. I then put the list in the drawer of my bedside table, where it remains until I take it out a year later and laugh at my lack of progress.

While some businesses still rely on traditional resumes in the hiring process, many are seeking a more complete picture of their future employees and turn to social media sites to learn more about potential hires.

Respect, care and the debt we owe to veterans

Twice a year in Downtown Morgan Hill – on Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day – local Vietnam vet Eddie Bowers organizes a ceremony at our own war memorial in the median of Monterey Road near First Street.

It’s remarkable how the Big Wheels of life just keep on turning

Since the three Derry daughters are older, and have been “all growed up” for a while, I’d forgotten. But it all came rushing back to me the other morning when, after I headed for the tool box, I recalled a Christmas Eve in high school when I became the hero of the day for a cute high school friend, Colleen, who baked me brownies and sang my praises for weeks.

Matters of the Heart: Congenital Heart Disease

Humans and animals often have similar health problems.  One example of this is Congenital Heart Disease. Congenital Heart Disease refers to a problem the animal is born with.  There are multiple types of Congenital Heart Disease: valve malformations or dysplasia, valve narrowing or stenosis, abnormal openings between the heart chambers or septal defects, and patent ductusarteriosus.

Dressing with all the taste, fewer calories

Happy New Year! Before I begin this week's column, I advise you to purchase a pork butt roast. They are usually on sale right now for under $2 per pound. Get one, wrap it tight and freeze it. It will be featured in my Mardi Gras article for Pulled Pork Poor Boys.

A look at routine vaccinations for felines

Q: Our cat, Princess, is 17 years old and for the past three years has never gone outside. Our veterinarian sent us a reminder that she needs vaccination boosters. Is it really all that necessary for her to get these shots, considering her age and living conditions?
