Of course, any loss of life is painful, but perhaps the death of a child is particularly tragic. Recognizing this, some faith groups offer special support to parents who are grieving for the loss of a baby.

Some of you wrote me telling how your pet made an impact on your life. One reader asked me to repeat my story about our childhood kitty-cat, Murphy. She was larger than life to my brothers and sister and me. Smarter than any other feline, she could open doors and find her way inside the walls of our very old house. But more than anything, she changed our father into a devoted cat person. I first wrote about Murphy 17 years ago, when I talked with a 6th grade student about euthanasia. The Basin and Range country beyond the Sierra Nevada is Mother Earth bare bones and naked. There are no elegant forests or misty skies to soften the landscape. Instead, the dry desert air and the high-contrast light of a relentless sun sharpen every crease and ridgeline. It is bleak, almost lifeless terrain with few temptations to linger.

The truly great thing about our community is the caring spirit for those less fortunate that goes beyond what I have experienced in any other community in which I have lived. This time of year, everyone is gearing up for the cold winter months ahead and working to make them more bearable for those living on low incomes. The Compassion Center, St. Joseph’s Family Center, the Salvation Army, and the temporary winter shelter for the homeless at the National Guard Armory are all in full swing in preparation for the upcoming winter months. Our caring community inspires even those who live beyond our borders to reach out and donate.
