Pit bulls, down go the Dodgers and brisket tacos

Pit bulls. Sadly, the dangerous potential outweighs the likely truthful argument that it’s the fault of the owners when a pit bull goes on the attack. Pit bulls have the genetic chops, literally, to clamp down and kill or maim. The recent attack on the horse in Morgan Hill is just the latest example. Children, and many other dogs, have been killed or seriously injured, too. Breed specific local legislation isn’t perfect, but it does make sense. Too many idiotic owners “train” pit bulls to be aggressive and you just can’t know enough about an owner to make a snap judgment about the dog that’s walking toward you and, perhaps, your child. You can say this, however. When a dog breed establishes an aggressive reputation, it often unfortunately attracts a certain personality type as an owner, a person who is not prone to ameliorating any aggressive tendencies in the breed but rather preys upon those tendencies to create a menace to society. I’m a fierce dog lover – have two, a Golden Retriever and an Old Time Farm Shepherd – but sadly I believe pit bulls should be regulated.

Warriors get three players they coveted in NBA draft

The Golden State Warriors walked away from the 2012 NBA draft having had three players they liked fall into their lap. North Carolina's Harrison Barnes, a projected top-five pick, was there for the taking at No. 7. Vanderbilt big man Festus Ezeli, whom the Warriors liked but didn't think would be available, wound up still on the board at No. 30.

COLUMN: After sex scandal, Warriors’ Jackson must know he’s under scrutiny

Mark Jackson is not the first man to enter a "gentleman's club" and lose his way. He is not the first individual whose extramarital affair led to criminal charges. But the Warriors' coach is now among the many whose selfish or questionable indiscretions yielded ugly consequences – in Jackson's case six years after he made the mystifying, monumentally stupid decision to take and send lewd photos of himself.

Kentucky dominates NBA draft

Kentucky became the first school to have players drafted with the first two overall picks of the NBA draft, and the Washington Wizards made another SEC freshman – St. Louis Chaminade graduate Brad Beal – the No. 3 overall pick.

Ethan Bennett Running Across the USA

There was an article in the  Dispatch sports section on June 5 by Josh Weaver about Ethan Bennett of Morgan Hill, who is running across the US (about 30 miles a day), to raise awareness and money for cancer research with all proceeds going to Lance Armstrong's LiveStrong organization.

Burrito Barney

It’s not what we feed the baby barn owl, it’s how.  Volunteers at the Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center wrap the squirming, screaming little raptor in a towel “burrito-style”. This method keeps them safe from its sharp talons and allows one person to maintain control while feeding it pieces of rodents with forceps. It can sometimes be a messy process, and after feeding time is over, baby needs its face and beak washed up.

Donate life-saving blood at local churches

Blood plays an important role in Christianity. The Gospels report that when Jesus of Nazareth shared the Last Supper with his disciples he took a cup of wine, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them all to drink from saying, “This is my blood of the New Covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” Almost all Christian communities celebrate the ritual of Holy Communion following the commandment he gave, using wine or grape juice to represent blood.
