‘Evita’: A refreshing new look at an old story
In London in 1976, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice released an album of a show that would be called “Evita.” By early 1977, the album took the world by storm and when “Evita” premiered in London in June 1978, everyone was humming "Don't Cry For Me Argentina." In September 1979, “Evita” opened on Broadway to a sold out run and won seven Tonys, including Best Musical, Score, Book and Director. “Evita's” Broadway run went on for four years.
Thinking about long marriages
On the occasion of my 25th wedding anniversary a few years ago, it dawned on me that I had been married to my husband for fully half my life. That realization floored me. My life as a carefree child and teenager seemed to stretch for eons, while our marriage still seemed so new. The year we married, 1982, the U.S. divorce rate was about 50 percent. According to Wikipedia, the current divorce rate is now about 53 percent.
Growing up
It’s mid-August, and for avid gardeners this means tiptoeing over tangled watermelon and winter squash vines and arms stained green up to the elbows from reaching into crowded tomato cages. As the temperature rises, it seems like there’s just no stopping the veggies. Even gardeners with ample growing space are starting to feel the squeeze around this time of year. If only I had one more garden plot…one more patio pot. So much food to grow, never enough space. Boo hoo. I think it’s time to grow up.

Enjoy a safe and fun Halloween downtown
Downtown Morgan Hill holds an annual “Safe Trick or Treat Night” that has grown into one of the most popular Halloween events in the South Valley. Several blocks of Monterey Street are closed-off to vehicle traffic, and downtown merchants and other groups come out to give candy to about 3,000 youngsters guided by their parents. MHAT-19’s volunteers will be part of the Halloween sweet treat give-away on Oct. 31. If you happen to be there, please stop by and say “Boo!” to our crew.
Events announce the coming of Christmas
Historically, Christmas Day was preceded by a month-long season called “Advent.” This was a penitential time, a period of solemn preparation for remembering the birth of Christ and his promise to return to earth.
