A collision involving five vehicles including a big rig east of Gilroy slowed traffic on Pacheco Pass Highway for about two hours this morning and sent six people to the hospital.

About 7:40 a.m., three vehicles traveling eastbound on Pacheco Pass east of Cañada Road had stopped behind a pickup truck waiting for a break in westbound traffic to make a left hand turn into a driveway. A 36-year-old Fresno man driving a three-axle big rig towing a 53-feet-long empty trailer did not notice that traffic had stopped as he approached the line of cars and slammed into the rear of a 1997 Chevrolet Silverado bringing up the end of the line, police said.

The impact of the crash pushed all the other stopped vehicles into each other, police said.

The crash blocked eastbound lanes for about an hour and officers routed both directions of traffic through the westbound lane.

Six people were transported to San Jose hospitals, five with minor injuries. A San Jose woman riding in a 1996 Buick was taken to the hospital with a possible broken leg.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
