The Gavilan College women’s volleyball team led host San Joaquin Delta College for much of Game 1 during the teams’ first round matchup of the Northern California Regional playoffs Tuesday night in Stockton.

However, the fifth-seeded Mustangs closed out the set on a 10-4 run and went on to defeat the No. 12-seed Rams 25-18, 25-16, 25-14, ending Gavilan’s season.

“There were too many plays not made down the stretch,” said Gavilan head coach Kevin Kramer. “It’s that simple.”

The Rams, who have been eliminated in the first round each of the last three postseasons, were without starting sophomore setter Melissa Avila because of a foot injury. Her absence didn’t help the Rams’ cause, Kramer said.

“We had some players play really well, it just wasn’t enough,” Kramer added.

Kayce Skocko led the Rams (16-11) with seven kills, Emily Tonascia had four kills and four blocks and Jaclyn Lantis had 19 digs. Avry Walker contributed three kills, three aces and 12 digs.
