The Gavilan College Rams softball team had the bats working overtime Tuesday, racking up a combined 22 runs in a doubleheader sweep of visiting West Hills College.
The Rams pushed their record above .500 in nonconference play (6-5-1) with victories of 13-1 and 9-1 – both in five innings. Games are called prior to the regulation seven innings if the home team is up eight or more runs after five innings of play.
Game 1 starter Danielle Vallejo earned the win in the circle for the Rams, receiving plenty of support at the plate.
Gavilan struck for four runs in the bottom half of the first. Elaina Vasquez kick started the scoring, driving in Hailey Nelson with a triple. Shayna Osuna singled home Vasquez, and after a Vallejo hit, Pricilla Orona delivered a two-RBI base knock.
Gavilan added eight runs in the second inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double off the bat of Adrianna Osuna and a two-RBI triple by Shayna Osuna. Ana Jericoff also had an RBI and Nelson two RBIs in the inning.
The Rams tacked on one final run in the third for good measure.
Game 2 followed a similar script. The Rams took an early lead with Vallejo’s RBI single. Nelson drove in Orona in the second for a 2-0 advantage, and a Samantha Bejarano double chased in Shayna Osuna in the third. Adrianna Osuna tripled and scored on a hit by Shayna Osuna, while a Bejarano single scored Shayna Osuna in a two-run fourth for the Rams. Four Rams scored in the fifth, three on Adrianna Osuna’s bases-clearing double, to put the clamps on the ball game.
Pitcher Jenny Barboa was credited with the win.
Gavilan is on the road this weekend at the Stars and Stripes Tournament hosted by College of the Sequoias.
