San Benito's Tyler Ruether gets up to block a shot Thursday night at home against Gilroy.

Thursday’s volleyball match between Gilroy High and San Benito High was a must win for the Balers for two reasons: A win would give them full control of the Tri-County Athletic League’s Valley Division and they would get some revenge from an early-season loss to the Mustangs.

In a tough, close battle, San Benito conquered both objectives, defeating the Mustangs (25-18, 19-25 25-20 and 25-19)  3-1. in Hollister.

San Benito senior Isaiah Acfalle led the way with a match-high 22 kills as the Balers came back from an early 4-0 deficit to take the match-deciding fourth game, 25-19.

Gilroy, behind Connor Escobar, played well forcing San Benito to come back in the third and fourth games.

After losing the first game, the Mustangs dominated San Benito from the beginning of the second game.

Gilroy, led by Escobar and Lucas Garvell, took a commanding 9-2 lead on their way to a 25-19 win.

But in the other three games, San Benito’s Acfalle and David Hawks were too much.

Hawks tallied 28 assists in the win. Carlos Gutierrez recorded 14 kills and David Stanton added 12 kills in the San Benito victory.

Gilroy’s Greg Spellman recorded a game-high 33 assists.
