The seminal work by two professors at the JFK School of Government at Harvard has revealed the transport cycle our leaders have chosen for us. In their “Going Private: The International Experience with Transport Privatization,” Professors Gomez-Ibanez and Meyer have shown that in both developed and developing counties, a “fairly similar cycle of private and public involvement” was found to occur in stages that they identified as follows:
1. Entrepreneurial
2. Consolidation
3. Regulation of fares and franchises
4. Decline in profitability
5. Withdrawal of capital and services
6. Public takeover
7. Public subsidies
8. Declining efficiency
9. Dilemma of subsidy cuts, fare increases and service cuts
10. Privatization
Your editorial shows that we are now at number nine. If past is prologue, then our next step should be structural reform, not lingering in the purgatory of number nine.
Like leech-loving medieval physicians, promoters of Assembly Constitutional Amendment number seven and the Silicon Valley Manufacturers Group, prefer that we stay in purgatory, carrying more tax burdens to support their doomed Soviet-style system. They try to convince voters that the Soviet planners were really right with their industrial strategy of government ownership and we Americans can make their system work here. It can carry us into the Brave New World. We can then spread it to manufacturing, housing, medicine, agriculture, etc. Tax Freedom Day can be on December 31! Think how easy your IRS Form 1040 will be to complete!
Once we abolish private property, we won’t have to concern ourselves with estate planning. No more stock market worries – no more stocks and bonds! Government ownership of all property will turn this sad democracy into a country its citizens can really be proud of. Damn you senior citizens driving your gas guzzlers to Safeway! The Ministry of Truth will convince everyone that the automobile caused our demise. Patton’s truck drivers will be forgotten as soon as we bury the last of their sorry generation. American socialism will overcome Black Hole Government, at least until the revolution restores capitalism. “What are we waiting for?” MTC’s wish to see $3 per gallon taxes on gasoline will double the work of our bankruptcy courts, increase house prices to prices that even the CEO’s will appreciate and get people to move into the proper land-use-high-rise Dirodonominiums along government-owned transit lines. Bullet Trains for all comrades! What did American ingenuity and free enterprise capitalism ever do for us anyhow? Yes, support! ACA-7 and socialized transportation, but tell your grandchildren: Caveat Viator!
