Gilroy – It’s been a long time coming, but Anchorpoint Christian football finally got a chance to give home fans the action they’ve been waiting for.

Defeating Calvary Chapel High School 54-12 in its home opener on Saturday, the Anchorpoint Warriors moved to 2-0 in its first season of 8-on-8 football.

The first touchdown scored in school history came when senior quarterback/safety Adrian Rodriguez picked off a long pass, and hightailed it 60 yards for a touchdown.

The Warriors’ defense then forced a three-and-out series to get the ball for its first offensive possession. Rodriguez provided one of many exclamation points on the afternoon by rolling out on the first play and hitting Colton Minyard with a 50-yard bomb for a score.

“Oh yeah, big win, we came alive. Everything is starting to come together,” head coach K.C. Adams said. “We’ve got a couple kids hurt, so we’re not at full power yet, but these kids that couldn’t run, tackle or catch eight weeks ago are starting to put things together.”

Adams also said much of the credit should go to the bruisers protecting his skill position players.

“Our offensive and defensive linemen are dominating,” he said. “Our line averages 6-3, 260, so they’re putting it on people. They’re opening holes Ray Charles could see through.”

The defense continued to stay active throughout the game as Joseph Apolinar intercepted a ball and returned it for a touchdown and Joshua Guido scooped and scored a fumble.

Running back Joshua Marozick, one of many kids playing their first year of football, ran in a 25-yard touchdown.

Adams thanked his coaching staff, in particular offensive coordinator Tim Pierleoni and defensive coordinator Marlowe Brinson, for helping to prepare the team for the start of the season, saying they had molded football players out of athletes.

“The kids just responded to the coaching,” he said.

The team’s next game will be at Anchorpoint this Saturday, when the Warriors will host Marina High School at 2pm.
