The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:
CHEERS: For the Economic Deve.opment Committee’s Educator of the Year, St. Mary School’s Stacy Huddleston who teaches language arts to seventh- and eighth-grade students. She stood out, said the selection committee, because of her ability to motivate students and relate material to them in the classroom. Congratulations. She is the first private school recipient of the annual award and from the accounts given by her students, it’s an honor well-deserved.
JEERS: For Soap Lake area landowners who seem to think that a proposed Indian casino which is miles away from the environmentally important body of water will drive up land prices. That isn’t going to happen and the landowners should wrap up negotiations with the Nature Conservancy which wants to preserve 20,000 acres around the lake.
CHEERS: For President Bush’s signing of a federal bill that will provide $20 million in restoration funding to California’s 21 historic missions. The missions, many of which are crumbling, are a treasure of historical and educational importance.
JEERS: For the hiring of a private company by the Miwok tribe to deliver an economic impact report to the public – and in particular San Benito County officials – on the proposed Highway 25 Indian casino. Clearly, what we will get here is what the tribe and investors pay for: a report on the glowing benefits a casino would bring. A better strategy: Give the money jointly to San Benito and Santa Clara counties to fund an objective look at the development’s impact. Now that would have credibility.
CHEERS: For Saturday’s downtown Christmas celebration. Santa shows up at 11am and festivities continue into the evening. C’mon down and enjoy the fun.
