West Nile Virus Found In San Jose
San Jose – The Santa Clara County Vector Control District announced Friday that adult mosquitoes collected from the Cambrian Park area of San Jose tested positive for West Nile virus – the first positive tests this year. To date, 25 human cases of WNV, including one fatality, have been reported throughout California in 2007, as well as 230 infected birds, two infected horses and three infected tree squirrels.
As a result of the positive tests, the district has scheduled fogging to suppress adult mosquitoes in parts of Cambrian Park and Los Gatos. Weather permitting, the fogging will take place at 11pm, Wednesday, July 25. This is the first report of WNV-infected mosquitoes in the county this year.
Officials have discovered infected birds, however, and 11 of 33 specimens were discovered in the areas to be fogged.
“Even with the district’s ongoing efforts of surveillance and control of immature mosquitoes, the detection of WNV positive adult mosquitoes has prompted the district to initiate ground fogging to suppress the biting adult mosquitoes,” said Tim Mulligan, district manager, in a news release.
The area to be fogged is bordered by Los Gatos Boulevard, Bascom Avenue to the west, Woodard Road and Camden Avenue to the north, Camden Avenue and Harwood Road to the east and Blossom Hill Road to the south. Residents in the target area will receive post cards through the mail with information regarding the fogging. Additionally, an informational open house will be held from 6:30 to 8:30pm, Monday, July 23 at the Camden Community Center, 3369 Union Avenue, San Jose.
