DEAR EDITOR:
I have never written to a city councilman or the newspaper before, but the events of the last few weeks has prompted me into action.
The subject is Mr. Chris Cote. This “worldwide AIDS activist” has now settled in our fair town. Good for him. I would think it would be for the same reasons my family did nine and a half years ago. The air is great. The schools are good. There weren’t too many people here, even though that has changed, and the people here a very friendly.
Mr. Cote has taken it upon himself to be our protector. I guess everyone has to have a hobby. Who does he think he is? First he stops those of us in the northwest quad who want a high-speed internet access by convincing the council that a tower on our water tank is bad for the water. GIVE ME A BREAK.
Verizon won’t upgrade their network to give us DSL. Charter is working at a snail’s pace to upgrade their network to allow broadband DSL. COVAD is only offering IDSL to business customers. Therefore, we are stuck with dialup.
We finally get a company willing to give us a product we have been demanding, and this “activist” gets it stopped. Who does he think he is?
Now he is getting his panties in a bunch about some cell towers at Luigi Aprea school. Cell service is terrible in Gilroy. We live in between cell areas. The signal strength here is very weak. Cingular is aware of that and tried to help us out by placing new sites to boost our signal.
Mr. Cote is worried about radiation. What strength sun block does he use? SPF 115? How many TV’s does he have? How many light bulbs? Does he own a computer? How about a microwave oven? How about a cordless phone? Or a cell phone? Maybe someone near him has a wireless home network? Or an alarm system. What about the radio he listens to?
None of these questions matter because his neighbors have these things and more. They have all become a part of our lives. To go chicken little on us isn’t very helpful. Getting all the soccer moms standing in front of the school isn’t helping us at all.
The only thing I am upset about was the school system told the Parent’s Club they were flagpoles. No mention of the cell site. No mention of the $900 a month the school would get. That’s a lot of pencils and paper I won’t be asked to supply my child every week.
Thanks a lot, Mr. Cote, are you willing to cough up the dough?
If he feels the need to be an activist, good for him. Let him go back to Africa where he was a big shot and do his activist thing and save lives. Get out of mine.
