Leading the way is Chris Gimenez, Gilroy High class of 2001, now in the Cleveland Indians organization.

Gimenez, a three-year scholarship player at the University of Nevada, was drafted in the 19th round of the 2004 draft by the Indians. Last year, he led the Single A Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the NY-Penn League in doubles (23), triples (3) and home runs (10) while batting .300 and driving in 38 runs in 71 games.

Gimenez has been called up to one of Cleveland’s Single A affiliates, the Lake County Captains. While he played in the outfield for the Scrappers, the former Mustang has been playing third base and catcher – his position at GHS – with the Captains.

Outfielder Jack Headley, a Gilroy native who attended Bellarmine, played last year with the Batavia Muckdogs of the New York-Penn League and suits up this season with the Washington Wild Things. Headley hit .272 with six doubles and four triples for the Muckdogs last season. He was signed as a nondrafted free agent by the Philadelphia Phillies after the June 2003 draft.

Several more Gilroy ballplayers will play this season in the independent leagues, hoping to get back on track with their professional careers.

These include Warren Gasper, Jr., who played for GHS, Gavilan and East Carolina. The outfielder, 26, played last season for the Sioux Falls Canaries. Infielder Gil Barry, also a Gilroy High product and Santa Clara grad, played last year for the Windy City Thunderbolts.
