The Highway fire just south of the 101/25 interchange 10 miles south of Gilroy was 50 percent contained as of Wednesday morning, CalFire reported.

GILROY—A wildfire that sparked in a canyon 10 miles south of Gilroy, just south of the U.S. 101/25 interchange, caused smoke to billow throughout the Garlic Capital.
The fire south of Gilroy ignited around 3:30 p.m and firefighters will be working to extinguish it throughout Wednesday, according to a CalFire spokesperson. As of 9 a.m., firefighters had the blaze 50 percent contained.
“We hope to have better containment number in a couple of hours,” fire prevention specialist Pam Temmermand told the Dispatch. “(Firefighters) will be working out there all day, possibly into the evening, and we’ll know more as the day goes on.”
No structures were threatened and no injuries were reported in the fire, which consumed 42 acres of dry vegetation, according to Temmermand.
The fire protection agency received calls about a possible vegetation fire that was reported around 4 p.m. in east Gilroy on the 2800 block of Godfrey Avenue, but firefighters determined it was just heavy smoke lingering in the area from the fire 10 miles to the south, Temmermand said.
Check back later for updates on this developing story.
The wildfire was 100 percent contained on July 3 and it burned a total of 42 acres of vegetation, according to CalFire.
