The Hollister Police Department received a grant to focus on traffic safety through enforcement and education.

A woman died Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident on Highway 156 near Hollister that involved a sport utility vehicle and a car.

The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on the highway between Union Road and San Juan Road. The driver of the Oldsmobile Alero car died at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle, a GMC Arcadia SUV, was transported to Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital with complaints of pain, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesman at the scene.

The CHP could not immediately provide other details, including information on the victims in the accident.

Both vehicles were rested facing westbound on the highway as traffic slowly drove through the area, one lane at a time. The front-right portion of the car was severely damaged, along with the windshield. It appeared as though the front of the SUV struck that portion of the car near the driver’s side.

Responding was the CHP, the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office, the Hollister Fire Department and the county’s contracted Calfire unit
