GILROY – Gilroy police are investigating whether a 38-year-old Gilroy woman was speeding and/or drunk when she crashed a car into a cast-iron post downtown Friday morning, around midnight.

The Oldsmobile sedan knocked the post about 80 feet and didn’t stop until it hit a light standard, police reported. The woman was driving northbound on Monterey Street at the time, near the intersection of Eighth Street.

The woman was injured, and the noise of a CALSTAR helicopter’s rotors rebounded through downtown as it landed in the nearby train station parking lot at 12:18 a.m. It flew the woman to San Jose Medical Center, where she was listed in fair condition at midday Friday.

The stoplight pole was damaged, and police called a city signal maintenance crew to repair it.
