DEAR EDITOR:
I will not watch the Motion Picture Academy Oscar Awards if the Michael Moore movie Fahrenheit 9/11 is up for an award in the documentary category. This move has been defended as being Moore’s version of the truth concerning Sept. 11. The problem as I see it is that there is only true facts and that truth cannot by definition have versions, it is either true or false. Opinions and beliefs do not have to be either true or false, because they are just opinions and beliefs and broadcasters have long labeled these published items as such.
Michael Moore had the right to make the movie and people have the right to see the movie, but I would also hope that people have enough intelligence to see other sources of information to either confirm or debunk what they just saw in Moore’s movie. The 9/11 Government Commission has published evidence that shows just how much of the movie is factually incorrect or distorted.
One event that is being used against President Bush by Moore and now by John Kerry is the moment when Bush is notified at the school about the attack and that he waits 6-7 minutes before leaving. This is being portrayed as indecision on the President’s part, but from friends that are in the Federal Government it is most likely that Bush was waiting for the word from his secret Service detail when to move. The Secret Service always has a secured perimeter around the President and people are in place based on his planned schedule. This event would have caused the Secret Service to not only double check the area but to also start the process for change in plans for the movement and protection of the President.
If Fahrenheit 9/11 were up for any award, it would be appropriate if it were in the running for either the Joseph E. Goebbels award for truth, or the Leni Riefonstohl award for visual arts. Mr. Goebbels was well known for his work in both written and visual media during the middle 1900’s and Leni Riefonstohl’s movie works includes the much discussed movie “Triumph of Will.”
