A man working on the West Marine building in Hollister sustained major trauma Friday when he burst through the roof and fell about 30 feet, a Hollister Fire Department captain confirmed.

The accident at West Marine, 2395 Bert Drive, occurred at about 11:30 a.m. Friday, said fire Capt. Tim Schneider. The employee with Mountain View-based Waterproofing Associates had been repairing dry rot on the two-story distribution warehouse with at least two other workers when he broke through the roof and fell, Schneider said.

Calstar transported the victim to a hospital, but his status is unclear. West Marine responded by sending all of its employees home for the day, a company representative confirmed.

No other workers were injured from West Marine or Waterproofing Associates.

Schneider said there were shelving units under the location where the man fell, but the fire captain was unsure whether the victim struck them.

West Marine earlier this year extended its lease through 2021 at the 240,000 square-foot Hollister location, with an option to extend it another five years.
