It’s rather like climbing Mount Everest – there are so many things that can go wrong to ruin the trek to the top. But there they are, 11- and 12-year-olds representing Gilroy in the most prestigious softball tournament in the land, facing off with global representatives from Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America, plus all the regional winners from across the
United States.
It’s the big time – signing autographs, limousine rides to the ballpark, professional photos – star treatment all the way.
How big is it?
Well, if those Gilroy girls who live down the street from many of you make it to the semifinals, their smiling faces will be grinning at us from the television on ESPN 2. How cool is that? Imagine how much fun the standard “What I did on my summer vacation?” back-to-school essay would be to write.
Anyway – win or lose – we’re very proud of our girls as they begin their fantastic week-long journey.
That journey will be filled with triumph, tragedy and moments like second baseman Michelle Sosa described after Gilroy beat Pendleton, Ore. to gain entry into the World Series: “I was so nervous it was hard to breathe.”
For Manager Dennis Castro and his crew, this week will be all about hard work, worry and making sure the players savor the experience. Gilroy parents will be recording every play, relaying cell phone updates to friends and family and rooting for the U.S. West.
Our highest hopes are these: Win with class, lose with class, play hard and with heart, hold your heads high regardless, enjoy the game, dream big and represent Gilroy well.
Good luck, we’re behind you! Wow, what a great accomplishment!
