In search of its 10th consecutive section championship, Gilroy High (227.5) holds a 98.5-point lead over second-place Palma (122) heading into tonight’s Central Coast Section wrestling finals, which begin at 7 p.m. at Independence High in San Jose.
Gilroy will have four representatives in the finals. The Chieftains have three.
First up for Gilroy will be No. 1-seed Victor Olmos, who has a rematch of last year’s 120-pound final with Menlo-Atherton’s Andres Delagnes – the No. 2-seed. Olmos won in 2011.
Paul Fox, also a No. 1-seed, will be in defense of his title in the 126-final against No. 2-seed Travis Roberts of Serra.
The 132-pound final will feature another one-versus-two matchup with Gilroy’s Nikko Villarreal and Palo Alto’s Nick Ortiz.
Senior Willie Fox (145) reached the finals for the fourth time in his career, pinning Chris Jin of Gunn in the first period. Fox is after his first individual crown. His opponent is Luis Quintero of King City.
Jesse Vasquez (106), Aaron Gonzalez (138) and Jose Lara (285) lost their semifinals matches. However, Vasquez and Lara won their third-place matches to clinch a berth to the state meet in Bakersfield next weekend. Gonzalez (fourth), Lupe Jimenez (sixth, 152) and Julian Cabajal (sixth, 182) made the podium.
Christopher’s Jimmie Lopez, who entered the tournament as the section’s No. 1-ranked 106-pounder will wrestle for a title tonight. Lopez defeated Live Oak’s Jonathan Robles-Rials by major decision, 12-0, in the semifinals, guaranteeing himself a state meet berth. His opponent will be Hunter Rehbein of Palma, the No. 3-seed. Rehbein beat Vasquez 7-4 to advance.
Stevie White (285) was narrowly defeated in his semifinals match. He then fell to Lara in overtime in the consolation final to place fourth overall.
