VIRGINIA BEACH – Senior Jesse Delgado and sophomore Willie Fox grappled their way to All-American status, claiming national championships at the 21st annual National High School Coaches Association Seniors Wrestling Championships in Virginia Beach on March 26-28.

The Senior Nationals attracts state champions and state placers from all over the country and is considered the most prestigious and recognizable tournaments in the country.

The 2010 edition had representatives from 47 states as well as two European countries. There was more than 2,600 competitors with credentials that included 855 state titles, according to the NHSCA Web site.

The tournament crowns a freshman, sophomore, junior and senior champion. Delgado became the first senior from GHS to win. Mustangs alum Hunter Collins won as a junior.

Delgado, a four-time Central Coast Section titlist and four-time state placer (state champion in 2009) won a national championship as a sophomore.

Fox, was runner-up at the event last year as a freshman.

Both wrestlers went undefeated – Delgado 6-0 and Fox 5-0 – to reach the top of the podium.

Fox wrestled at 125 pounds, a weight class down from the 130 pounds he wrestled at during most of the season. He pinned two-time Florida state champion and 14-ranked in the nation, Rossi Bruno in the finals.

In patented Delgado fashion, he racked up a 14-5 major decision victory in the 119-pound final, beating three-time Utah state champ Carson Kuhn. Kuhn, ranked third in the country at 119 pounds, had not lost a match since his freshman year, GHS assistant coach Mike Koester said, and was 140-0 in that span, until Delgado snapped the streak.

All wrestlers who place in the top-eight are recognized as All-Americans.

GHS senior Dominic Kastl finished seventh, finishing the tournament 4-2 and defeating Delaware runner-up Kenny Boyles in the seventh-place match.

Senior Vicente Aboytes (152), who won his first CCS title this season went 1-2 at the tournament.

Freshman Leif Dominguez (103), who also notched a CCS title , ended his tournament at 3-2.
