A woman driving the wrong way down Monterey Road collided with two other vehicles Thursday night, sending herself and another driver to the hospital, according to the Gilroy Police Department.

GPD Sgt. Greg Flippo said the woman, whom he described as elderly and possibly suffering from health issues, was traveling north in a white Ford Escape against southbound traffic between Luchessa Avenue and 10th Street around 7:30 p.m. when she struck a black Lexus sedan, sending it into a tree.

She then collided with a Dodge Caravan, which caused that vehicle to careen into a parked car along Monterey Road near Ervin Court, Flippo said.

The woman and the driver of the black Lexus were transported to a hospital with currently unknown injuries. The driver of the Dodge Caravan did not require medical attention and was able to leave the scene under his own power, Flippo said.

Flippo said the wrong-way driver may have been suffering from a condition brought on by her diabetes.

The ages of those involved were not immediately known.

A portion of the southbound lanes just north of Luchessa Avenue were closed from 7:30 p.m. to about 9 p.m.
