GILROY—Gilroy gymnasts Josephine Rawlins and Allison Mercurio stole the show at the Flip or Treat Invitational hosted by HD Gymnastics Oct. 10 and 11 in Livermoore.
Rawlins and Mercurio, both USA Sports Level 5 competitors, notched standout individual performances and did while wearing Queen of Hearts costumes, which were handmade by coaches Jennifer Yip and Amy Oelrich.
Mercurio gave a silver medal performance on the floor exercise to score a 9.0. The state qualifier also took home a pair of bronze medals on the balance beam (9.35) and the all-around (35.45).
Rawlins took third on the balance beam (9.25) in her age group and qualified for the state competition.
“Gymnastics competition (is) so stressful on the girls,” head coach Yip said. “But the Halloween theme helped make it fun and the girls performed so well because of it.”
USA Sports captured third place at all three levels—Level 3 (106.10), Level 4 (100.675) and Level 5 (107.425)—in the team competition.
