In the spirit of California's gold rush, students got to keep whatever they found while panning for gold.

Bandanas, leather chaps and cowboy hats. Yee-haw!

Students from Rucker Elementary School dressed up in traditional cowboy and pioneer attire for the 14th annual Gold Rush Day, an event dedicated to having students experience the way pioneers lived.

As part of the fourth grade curriculum, California state history is embodied at Gold Rush Day. Students panned for gold, played games, made toys and danced, all in pioneer fashion.

Curt Hentschke, Rucker Elementary fourth grade teacher, said Gold Rush Day is a great way to get students out of class yet have them learn.

“Rather than reading about it, doing it helps them experience history,” Hentschke added.
