GILROY – Motorists traveling on Highway 152 east of Gilroy can expect delays of 10 to 15 minutes throughout the week while Caltrans crews “winterize” the road.
All work on the road will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. in an effort to avoid rush-hour delays, according to Caltrans.
“We decided to do this all at once instead of piece-mealing it,” Caltrans Spokeswoman Lauren Wonder said. “The delays will be worth it when we are finished.”
The work will take up a 25-mile stretch of the highway beginning just east of U.S. 101 and ending at the Merced County line at the San Luis Reservoir. The two-lane stretch of the highway west of Route 156 will be conduced to one lane during the repairs and the four-lane stretch of divided highway east of 156 will be condensed to two lanes.
Work to repair pavement, clear weeds, replace old signs, repaint lines, clean up litter and repair the guardrails is scheduled to be finished by Friday afternoon, but it could take longer to make all the needed repairs, Wonder said.
“We are winterizing the road because right now it is missing fog lines (the white lines near the shoulder) in many areas and some signs are not up to par,” Wonder said. “If people can’t afford the delay, they can always take Route 156, but the delays shouldn’t be that bad and they will make the trip on 152 much easier in the future.”
