In March, the Gilroy Unified School District issued 40 layoff notices to teachers as part of a $6.3 million budget reduction forced upon the school district by the state.
The layoff notices came after trustees decided to increase class sizes to 28 in kindergarten through third grades, 34 in fourth through eighth grades and 36 in ninth through 12th grades – the worst case scenario. However, class sizes are a negotiable item and both the union and district have put forward proposals calling for class sizes smaller than what the board approved. Additionally, the district rescinded 14 layoff notices after accounting for teacher resignations, according to Human Resources Director Kim Filice. The following 26 teachers attended a layoff hearing April 28 and will not be returning to the district next school year unless more positions open up within the district, Filice said.
