Gilroy – Success has many different faces – 29 at least.
Students from across Gilroy Unified School District were recognized Tuesday night during the second annual Student Success Awards at the GUSD office.
“They all had neat stories, and heart-warming stories, and demonstrated success in a variety of different ways,” said Superintendent Edwin Diaz.
Students are selected by their individual school administrators based upon criteria including demonstrated academic achievement or leadership, a commitment to community and school service, or overcoming adversity to achieve the unexpected.
“We want to define success in the broadest of terms,” Diaz said, instead of relying on test scores or pure academic aptitude as a measurement of student achievement.
Each elementary school nominated two individuals, and both high schools and middle schools chose one candidate from each grade, resulting in a final tally of 29 students.
The Student Success Awards was an event the Superintendent’s Parent Advisory Committee organized last year. Recipients are given a certificate of recognition and their photograph hangs in the GUSD boardroom for the duration of the following year.
