$500 Savings Account for Every Child – Legal or Not – Has the World Gone Mad?
Dear Editor,
The Dispatch reported recently that there was a bill introduced in the state Senate, which would give every child born in California after Jan. 1, 2008, a $500 savings account. It went on to say that if the parents would deposit $50 a month, the account should yield approximately $17,000 by the time the child reaches the age of 18.
What a ludicrous idea! If people are not saving for their children’s education now, what makes anyone think this would make any difference? This would also cost us, you and I who have saved money and sent our kids to school, an estimated $285 million a year. You can only imagine the accounting nightmare this would cause. Are we going to monitor family savings to make sure people are making their monthly deposits? Can you imagine the in-family fighting this would cause? This $500 would also be given regardless of income or immigration status.
At this point, I need to make my position extremely clear because I know some delight in taking statements out of context, assuming one thing or another, and are free to accuse without any knowledge whatsoever. I don’t want to see a giveaway of another kind to anyone.
I am all for legal immigration. Let me repeat that. I am all for legal immigration but from the way it was stated, this would include giving $500 to people like the ones who were featured in the paper the other day who paid the coyotes to illegally bring them into the country where she had, form what was reported, two surgeries. Now we are to pay to educate their kids in our over-crowded schools and cover their medical expenses in our hospitals that are operating in the red partly because of this type of situation. Their housing, from what I understand, is also being subsidized. I would think proud legal immigrants who have worked and studied very hard to become a U.S. citizen and are now working would be upset with this also.
I know at this point some will be tempted to assume one thing or another, and we all know what that does. I would be glad to match my donation of time and resources with you any time. I will match the number of donated working trips to Mexico working on public buildings, a children’s camp and orphanage.
I would really look to our politicians for some practical answers. Our entitlement giveaways must stop.
