The Gilroy girls basketball team lost another overtime heartbreaker at the NIKE Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Ariz. Thursday afternoon. The Lay Mustangs were defeated by Torrey Pines 72-65 in the Consolation Championship game.
The “‘Stangs jumped out to an early 23-12 lead thanks in large part to the tenacious defense of Jessica Groppe and Vanessa Wilkins.
“I can’t say enough about the way that Jessica played the last two days. She was all over the place,” bragged head coach Keri Williams. “And Vanessa was equally as impressive.”
The bigger Torrey Pines team would however mount a rally and when they outscored Gilroy 17-10 in the final period the game was tied at 55-55 at the end of regulation.
Groppe led all scorers with 20 points, followed by Wilkins and Katherine Hussey, each who dropped in 14 points. Kristen Campos drained two three-pointers and had six points in the game.
The Lady ‘Stangs will play their final game of the tournament today at 12:30pm against Chandler High School from Arizona.
“It was a very close game again. We were right in it down to the end. I’m really proud of the way we played this week. We won one game and lost two in overtime,” Williams said. “We are definitely a better basketball team than when we got here on Monday. It was a great bonding and learning experience. We will benefit greatly from this opportunity.”
