Visit ‘Gilroy’ author

Band concert

GILROY – The Gilroy High School Band will hold its “Winter Concert” on Thursday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m., in the Gilroy High School Theater. The musical evening will be directed by Joey Fortino. Children Christmas plays

GILROY – Pacific West Christian Academy will perform two Christmas musicals at the South Valley Community Church, 8095 Kelton Drive. On Thursday, Dec. 11, children in kindergarten- through- second-grade will perform The Christmas Story at 7 p.m. On Friday, Dec. 12, children in grades 3 through 6 will perform “Meet Me at the Manger” at 7 p.m. Admission is free. $1.75 million for perchlorate?

MORGAN HILL – The U.S. House of Representatives on Monday approved, 242-176 an $820 billion an omnibus appropriations bill that includes $1.75 million to the Santa Clara Valley Water District to develop and implement cleanup technologies and treatment options for perchlorate-contaminated groundwater in south Santa Clara County. Congressman Richard Pombo, R-Stockton, worked with representatives Zoe Lofgren, D-San Jose, and Mike Honda, D-San Jose, to get the bill passed.

The water district plans to use most of the funding to test and certify filtration systems that could be used on private wells. Olin Corp. has taken responsibility for the chemical making its way into the groundwater from a former safety flare plant on Tennant Avenue in Morgan Hill. The U.S. Senate is expected to take up the bill in January, after which it will go to the president’s desk to await signing or veto.

Perchlorate group meets

SAN MARTIN – The San Martin Perchlorate Community Advisory Group, will meet Friday, Dec. 12, 2 to 4 p.m. to avoid holiday conflicts.

PCAG, formed to liaison with water officials on the perchlorate issue and the public, normally meets at 7 to 9 p.m. the fourth Thursday of every month. The public is urged to attend these meetings at the San Martin Lions Club, 12415 Murphy Ave., behind the airport. Details: 683-2667.

Rent a caroler

GILROY – Members of the Gilroy High School Chamber Singers are available as carolers. Rent them for home or office parties, family gatherings, seasonal dinners or any type of holiday celebration.
