Fire claims SM garage
SAN MARTIN – It took firefighters from four local departments more than an hour Saturday to contain a fire that erupted in the detached garage of a family home in San Martin and caused $300,000 worth of damage.
No one was injured in the blaze at 195 Lena Ave., but the 1,600 square foot garage was destroyed. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
Fire engines from the Gilroy Fire Department, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the South Santa Clara County Fire District and Santa Clara County Fire all responded to the home at 4:57 p.m.
Show your Mustang pride
GILROY – The Mustang Pride Committee, a group of parents and educators working to instill community and school pride at the high school, is asking interested GHS alumni to attend a meeting Wednesday, March 26. The group is looking to generate a list of alumni and ideas for supporting the students, faculty and alumni of Gilroy High.
“The possibilities are endless, but we want to see where the interest is,” organizer Rhoda Bress said.

Support ICF over breakfast
GILROY – The Italian Catholic Federation Branch 28, Gilroy is sponsoring a scholarship breakfast at St. Mary Cullen Hall, 11 First St., on Sunday, March 30 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Breakfast will include pancakes, sausage, eggs, juice, milk and coffee. Donations are $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. All proceeds benefit ICF charities and scholarship funds for local schools. Details: 847-5151.
Fill a child’s Easter basket
GILROY – The “Easter Bonnets and Baskets” celebration is a popular event with both needy clients of St. Vincent de Paul and energized volunteers. On the day of the event, volunteers contribute refreshments and help clients select free new clothing for their families. Other volunteers lead game and craft activities with the children, including face-painting, basket-making and egg decorating. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
St. Vincent de Paul needs volunteers to host the event on Saturday, April 5 at its store located at 7680 Monterey St. The public is also invited to make donations, such as new clothing, new shoes, new socks and undergarments, as well as baskets, candies or dental hygiene items. Monetary donations can be mailed to PO Box 5579, San Jose CA 95150-5579 and items may be dropped off at St. Vincent de Paul. Anyone who would like to volunteer should call Grace Ward at 842-5524.
Want to be a garlic queen?
GILROY – The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association is currently accepting applications for the 25th annual queen pageant, which will take place on Saturday, May 3 at 7 p.m. in the Gavilan College Theater. Admission is $5. Contestant applications can be picked up through the Garlic Festival office, 7473 Monterey St. or by calling the office at 842-1625. Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 24; a resident of Gilroy, Hollister, Morgan Hill, San Juan Bautista or San Martin; single who has never been married and has no children; and a high school graduate by June 2003. The deadline to enter is March 27 by 5 p.m. Contestants are judged on the results of personal interview, talent, evening gown, garlic speech and overall poise and personality. GILROY – The American Family Law Offices are holding a free one-hour educational presentation on revocable living trusts on Thursday, March 27 at AL Post #217, 74 West Sixth St. at 7 p.m. Issues to be discussed include: wills versus living trusts, how to avoid probate, conservatorship and eliminate unnecessary estate taxes. Supporting Morgan Hill teachers one salad at a time
GILROY – Support Morgan Hill public school teachers by enjoying a meal at Fresh Choice. The restaurant will donate 20 percent of April Fools Day’s receipts of those customers who declare they are supporters of the Teachers Aid Coalition at the register. Spaghetti dinner for devoted teacher’s family
MORGAN HILL – The teachers at Morgan Hill Country School and friends of Katy Tamura, who died at Stanford Hospital while awaiting a liver transplant, are hosting a spaghetti dinner Friday, March 28, to benefit a trust fund for her two children. Tamura was a teacher in Morgan Hill for more than 20 years. The dinner will be held in the gym at the Morgan Hill Country School between 5 and 7 p.m. Take-out dinners are also available between 4 and 5 p.m. Adult meals are $10, children’s meals are $5. Take-out dinners are $10 each.
There will also be music, dancing and games to honor Tamura. People wishing to attend should make checks payable to Tamura Spaghetti Dinner and mail to Tamura Spaghetti Dinner, Morgan Hill Country School, 105 John Wilson Way, Morgan Hill, CA 95037.
