DEAR EDITOR:

Florence Trimble made many contributions to our community; if you’ve seen The Dispatch recently, you’ve been amazed by her many accomplishments.

In one of her final acts of goodwill as a beacon of light over Gilroy, she willed part of her estate to help in building the planned transitional shelter for the homeless. But – in a stroke of genius – she has made the availability of the money contingent upon ground first being broken to start the new shelter. After giving all she could to others for one lifetime, in a final benediction of love for her fellow human beings, she also donated her body to science.

Her family invites our community (including the homeless) to attend Florence Trimble’s Memorial Service this Sunday, Jan. 19, at 3 p.m. It will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church and will be an ecumenical service with a number of pastors participating, including Rev. Charles Krahenbuhl, Rev. Lee Neish, Fr. Daniel Derry, Rev. Alison Berry, Rev. Paul Sweet, Rev. Gretchen Vandenberg, and Rev. Becky Goodwin.

Florence chose her favorite hymns and made the plans for her own service, requesting the presence of much beautiful music. There will be an invitational choral anthem for those with choir experience who would like to participate. A rehearsal will be held at 2 p.m. at St. Mary before the service.
