The cinema switch at Cinema Six at Tennant Station in Morgan Hill is good news for South Valley movie-goers.
With CineLux taking over from Peachtree Cinemas, giving the place a good scrub, installing stadium rocker-love seating – good for dates – and expanding, first to eight screens, then to 11, movie fans won’t know the place.
“This theater is going to be like going to Hollywood,” said Howard Taormino, vice president of business development for CineLux Theaters. “People can expect to see lots of neon and grandeur. It will be like stepping back into the old days. It will be very Art Deco.”
They will have to get through several dry months, from Sept. 1 to Christmas, when the theaters are dark, undergoing their face lift, but the end of the tunnel is bright.
A new surround sound system and lobby café – at last lattés – will bring the Odeon into the 21st century. We’ve always admired the civilizing influence of the café in Camera Three in downtown San Jose, that seems to admit that adults watch movies, too.
The CineLux incursion is the first real sign of promised renovation at Tennant Station. It is soon to be followed – one hopes – by an even more significant change when the central portion is demolished and replaced with a new grocery, an office building and a gas station, tastefully set back from the corner of Tennant Avenue and Monterey Road.
We hope CineLux’s infusion of energy provides the boost needed to make the center more user-friendly and attract more shops and services.
In the meantime, the Platinum Theaters in Gilroy can expect an even larger flow from Morgan Hill and San Martin residents. And the Granada Theater in downtown Morgan Hill will remain open, showing first-run movies.
At the first of the year, the curtain will reveal a plethora of options for South Valley residents intent on catching the latest flick, enjoying a bag of popcorn and sipping a latté in front of the big screen.
