MORGAN HILL – Federal Drug Enforcement Agency agents arrested four men June 30 and seized 40 pounds of cocaine, with an estimated value of between $300,000 and $400,000.
The bust occurred on U.S. 101 and Masten Avenue, just north of Gilroy, where two separate cars were stopped. The suspects arrested were Mexican nationals believed to be distributing hundreds of pounds of cocaine throughout the West Coast, said Special Agent Richard Meyer.
The suspects will be charged in federal court for violation of the Controlled Substances Act. They were not identified.
Few details are being released about the arrests because the investigation is ongoing. The DEA made the arrests public Thursday.
“This branch has been cut off,” Gary R. Baldocchi, resident agent in charge of the investigation, said Thursday. “I don’t know if we can go up another branch, but there’s always a possibility.”
Meyer viewed the arrests and seizure as a victory and a good example of the type of people the DEA is after.
“There is a misconception that we only go after users,” he said. “That is not true. We target those who are higher than them and make arrests. We don’t want the user, we want the distributor.”
The DEA is continuing its investigation to possibly identify other members of the drug trafficking organization.
