The following individuals and organizations deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:

JEERS: For Mayor Tom Springer who, at the 11th hour, crossed into school trustee territory Wednesday evening to tell the Board where to put it – the city’s second high school that is. After the Board has spent two years looking at this challenge and identifying sites, the mayor publicly proclaimed just before a public forum on the site location that Southpoint Business Park is the ideal spot for Gilroy’s second high school. Forget that he’s just plain wrong on this one – what really is troubling is the mayor’s grandstanding. C’mon mayor, if you’ve got a decent idea share it in such a way that it’s not seen as a stab in the back by your fellow city leaders.

CHEERS: For the California Highway Patrol which is dilligently patrolling the newly opened U.S. 101 lanes from Morgan Hill to San Jose through the Coyote Valley. Motorists need to get the message: slow down! Many are rocketing through the new stretch and the last thing we need to create is a new “Blood Alley” to match the days when the old Monterey Road through Coyote Valley earned the reputation because of deadly crashes.

CHEERS: For the Memorial Day festivities in Gilroy. What a wonderful hometown celebration. Russ Valiquette along with Councilmen Bob Dillon and Craig Gartman deserve the lion’s share of credit. Well done. Those who have served our country – one and all – would be pleased by the combination of somber tribute and all-American joy.

CHEERS: For the Gilroy High School choirs which will conclude another outstanding year of great music-making on Thursday, June 5 at their annual Pops Concert. This year’s theme – Motown tunes – will have the house rockin’. Mark your calendars to enjoy songs by the Dixiecups, The Angels, Dionne Warwick, Dianna Ross and the Supremes and the Beatles. The Gavilan College Theater will host the event. Tickets are $5. Doors open at 7:10 for the 7:30 p.m. show.
